What the Deep Dive is

The Deep Dive is Blockhaven's full initiation on NIKE: the distribution repair, demand and North America, earnings quality, peer comparison, three valuation scenarios, and the evidence that would change the view. It is written for a reader who wants the evidence and the counterarguments, not only the conclusion.

Distribution repair is visible; demand and profit repair are not yet proven

Corrective actions are substantial and the wholesale recovery is real. Consumer demand, underlying profitability and the economics of the replacement products are not yet proven, and the price is already consistent with a partial repair.

The thesis, and why the stock is here

Investment thesis

NIKE has made substantial corrective moves, and distribution repair is visible, above all in North America, where wholesale grew 14% on a currency-neutral basis in FY2026. Durable consumer demand, underlying profitability and the economics of the products replacing the classic franchises remain unproven.

The same standard has to apply to good news and bad. This report excludes the IEEPA tariff recovery from the group's earnings, which puts FY2026 diluted earnings per share at $1.58 rather than the reported $2.10. Applied to North America, the same convention turns the segment's reported EBIT margin of 26.2% into 21.5%, below the 24.2% it earned in FY2025. North America is evidence that distribution and revenue are recovering. It is not yet evidence that the region's profitability has.

At the last close the shares cost 17.1x reported and 22.8x recovery-excluded earnings. The base case below, a partial repair, has a FY2028 exit value of $41.31, which at an illustrative 10% hurdle is $35.18 on the exit price alone, close to the last close: on price, the repair is not on offer for nothing, though a dividend that is maintained would add to a holder's return. The bull case needs the underlying gross margin past its pre-reset level, and the stress below the bear case shows how far a permanent impairment would reach.

The evidence, by how far it goes

What is known

Evidence the report measures

  • Reported revenue was broadly flat in FY2026. Currency-neutral revenue declined 2%, compared with a 9% decline in FY2025.
  • Shipments to partners grew while NIKE's own channel shrank: wholesale +4% and NIKE Direct -8% on a currency-neutral basis in FY2026.
  • Excluding the tariff recovery, FY2026 earnings per share were $1.58 and North America's EBIT margin was 21.5%, against 24.2% in FY2025.
  • Greater China revenue is 22.5% below FY2022 and its segment EBIT 46.0% lower.
  • Free cash flow covered the dividend 0.91x in FY2026, and the buyback fell to $146 million.
  • Inventory ended the year flat in value with more units in it, and the company says it collected substantially all of its tariff receivable after the year ended.

What is inferred

Blockhaven's reading of that evidence

  • That part of the wholesale growth reflects partners restocking shelves and new distribution rather than consumers buying more, because NIKE Direct fell over the same year.
  • That Greater China's decline reflects competitive pressure and not only a weak market, as the comparison under Why the stock is here suggests: an interpretation, not a measurement.
  • That the narrowing year-over-year gross-margin drag reflects finite reset costs rolling off rather than a lasting loss of pricing.

What remains unproven

What the evidence does not yet show

  • Durable, full-price consumer demand for the product replacing the classic franchises.
  • That North America's underlying profitability has recovered: on this report's own convention it has not yet.
  • That Greater China's decline has a floor.
  • A financial framework: a margin, a revenue path and a cost base management has committed to.

Why the stock is here

Start with the arc, and keep the bases apart. Revenue peaked at $51.4 billion in FY2024, fell 9.8% in FY2025 and was flat in FY2026 at $46.4 billion, while currency-neutral revenue changed -2%. Against that FY2024 peak the EBIT margin is down 4.4 pp on revenue down 9.7%: operating leverage, working the way it works when volume leaves a fixed cost base. Against FY2022 the picture is worse and different: revenue is close to where it was and the margin is still 6.4 pp lower, which is not leverage but a business that costs more to run at the same size.

Source: Fundamental trajectory: Five fiscal years; Earnings quality: Three measures. Basis: As reported, and recovery-excluded for FY2026 only.

The decomposition says where it went. Between FY2022 and FY2026 the reported gross margin fell from 46.0% to 42.9%, demand creation rose from 8.2% to 10.2% of revenue, and operating overhead rose from 23.5% to 24.5%. By those reported figures, roughly half the lost margin is price and mix and roughly half a cost base that grew into a company that then stopped growing. The reported gross margin is flattered by the tariff recovery: without it the FY2026 figure is 40.8%, and the difference is the tariff cost the recovery reversed.

The product cause is the one management now describes openly. NIKE sold its classic footwear franchises so widely that they stopped being scarce and lost much of their pricing power, and it has spent this year taking supply back out: more than $2.00 billion of classic franchises removed in FY2026 by management's own account. Jordan Brand revenue fell from $8.70 billion in FY2024 to $7.03 billion in FY2026. Management says NIKE Sportswear and Jordan Streetwear are together about half of revenue and will keep falling this fiscal year. So about half of revenue is still falling while its supply and product architecture are deliberately reset. Not all of that decline is chosen, and the product meant to replace it has not yet been measured.

The channel cause is the mirror image. NIKE Direct is 17.7% below its FY2024 peak, at $17.7 billion, and its share of NIKE Brand revenue has fallen from 43.6% to 39.2%. NIKE Brand Digital fell 12% on a currency-neutral basis in FY2026 after 20% the year before, as the company cut promotions to make digital a full-price platform. Wholesale, which the previous strategy had deprioritized, grew 4%. The mix shift costs gross margin, because wholesale carries a lower one, and it moves the measurement of demand one step away from the consumer: NIKE now sees more of its sales as shipments to partners.

The geographic cause is Greater China, and it is where a cyclical story is hardest to sustain. Revenue there is 22.5% below FY2022 and segment EBIT is 46.0% lower, taking the segment margin from 31.3% to 21.9%. In the fourth quarter Greater China fell 17% on a currency-neutral basis. The pace of that decline has moved about rather than steepened without relief: it eased to -10% in the first quarter and again to -10% in the third. Both easings were given back in the quarter that followed, and the segment has been negative in every quarter of the last two years.

Growth side by side (Greater China, FY2026; each company's own figures, not a market share). NIKE Greater China revenue, currency-neutral: -13% in FY2026. adidas, Greater China net sales growth: +15% (Q2 2026, currency-neutral). ANTA, Revenue growth: +12.9% (H1 2026, reported). The periods do not end on the same day: the NIKE figure is a fiscal year to May, adidas reports a June quarter, and ANTA a calendar half-year. ANTA's figure is group-wide rather than Greater China alone. None of these figures measures a market, so none of them can say what part of one anyone supplies.

How Blockhaven reads it (Greater China, FY2026). Blockhaven reads that gap as competitive pressure rather than a market that simply stopped growing, because rivals reporting growth while the subject contracts is hard to explain by weak demand alone. It is an inference from relative performance, and this report has no dataset that measures the denominator.

The cash statement is where the pressure shows. Free cash flow of $2.18 billion covered dividends of $2.41 billion only 0.91x over, against 3.1x in FY2024, and buybacks, $4.25 billion in FY2024, were $146 million in FY2026. The balance sheet is not the immediate problem: cash and short-term investments of $9.03 billion stand against debt of $7.94 billion, of which $2.00 billion falls due within the year, leaving net cash of $1.08 billion after all of it. The ranking of claims on cash has changed, and the buyback went first.

A sample of the analysis

Distribution, demand and North America

North America is the strongest evidence that the reset is working, and it has to be measured on the same basis as everything else. The company classified $965 million of the $986 million tariff recovery within North America. By the reported figures, the segment's EBIT rose 13.5% and its margin rose 2.0 pp to 26.2%. Excluding the recovery, on the convention this report applies to the group, EBIT fell 6.8% and the margin fell 2.7 pp to 21.5%, below the 24.2% of FY2025.

The difference is almost entirely gross margin. The segment's gross margin was 45.6% as reported and 40.9% excluding the recovery, against 43.5% a year earlier, while demand creation and overhead were close to unchanged as a share of revenue. The company says the recovery largely offset the IEEPA tariffs recognized during the year, so the reported margin approximates North America without that tariff cost and the recovery-excluded margin approximates it carrying the cost in full. The fourth quarter says the same in the company's own words: North America EBIT rose 91% as reported and would have fallen 1% without the refund.

Neither figure is a forward margin. The tariffs that replaced the recovered ones continue, at incremental rates management assumes at 10% and then 15%, and their cost against the region's revenue is not a figure the company has given. North America therefore establishes that distribution and revenue are recovering without yet establishing that profitability has: on the reading that treats the tariffs as gone the margin rose, and on the reading that keeps them it fell.

Source: North America tables, reported and recovery-excluded. Basis: As reported, and recovery-excluded by the convention the report applies to the group.

The company allocated $965 million of the IEEPA tariff recovery to North America. The recovery-excluded column removes it by the convention this report applies to the group, so the segment and the group are measured the same way. FY2025 is shown as reported.

Sell-in is not sell-through

Wholesale growth is shipment growth. It measures what NIKE sold to retailers, and the company attributes North America's +14% to expanded distribution, higher shipments to existing partners and fewer marketplace actions than a year earlier. Each is real, and none of them shows that consumers bought more. Over the same year NIKE's own channel in the region, where NIKE does see the consumer, fell 6%, partly because digital was deliberately repriced toward full price.

Management does not publish sell-through, and what it says about it is mixed: retail sales grew in the first weeks of the fourth quarter and decelerated from late April, Sportswear and Jordan Streetwear sell-through remains challenged, and the company is tightening buys and cutting future sell-in in response. The retail partners cited under Competition reported negative comparable sales in their latest quarters. Those are measurements of their own stores, not of NIKE, so they lower confidence in consumer demand without measuring it.

Inventory

Inventory ended FY2026 at $7.50 billion, essentially unchanged in value, and that alone does not establish clean inventory or healthy sell-through. The company attributes the flat figure to more units offset by product mix, and by geography management described North America up by a mid single-digit rate, EMEA up by a low double-digit rate with liquidation under way, and Asia Pacific and Latin America up by a high single-digit rate, against a double-digit fall in Greater China. A flat total that hides more units company-wide, higher inventory in most geographies and a clearance in Greater China is a reason to watch markdowns in the coming quarters, not evidence that the reset has left no overhang.

Principal risks and what would change the view

Downside stress

Assumptions: revenue -6.0% in FY2027, -3.0% in FY2028, reaching $42.3 billion in FY2028; tax 21.0%; 1,495.0 million diluted shares and no buyback; free cash flow at 80% of net income; the dividend at $1.64 a share. All share values in the stress grid are below the bear-case exit value.

6.0%$1.34$13.41$16.10$18.780.65x-$848m

Shading deepens with the value in the cell; every value is printed.

The bear case is a business that stops repairing, and at $19.82 it is not a floor. The stress grid is a business permanently impaired, with revenue down to $42.3 billion and margins of 4.0% to 6.0% valued on lower multiples: $8.94 to $18.78 a share. The 6.0% margin case earns $1.34 a share, slightly more than the bear case's $1.32, yet is valued lower because its multiple is lower: valuation compression alone can take the value below the bear case even when earnings are no lower. The operating impairment is in the lower-margin cases. In every row free cash flow fails to cover the dividend, at 0.44x to 0.65x, so paying it in full would draw on the balance sheet.

Nothing in the evidence requires this outcome, and nothing in it rules it out: it is what a Greater China decline that keeps going, a replacement product that does not sell through at full price and a permanently higher tariff cost would look like together.

Decision rules

Each rule names what to watch, the window in which to judge it and the model assumption it would move. Applying one is a judgment on the evidence taken together, not a switch.

Demand repair fails, or follows

Observation:
Whether full-price demand follows the shipments, judged together on NIKE Direct in North America, markdowns, inventory units, partner comparable sales, wholesale reorders and any sell-through disclosed for the new product. NIKE Direct growth would corroborate a repair, not prove full-price demand by itself; shipments rising into rising inventory and markdowns would point to failure.
Assessment window:
The Q1 FY2027 report on 10-01-2026, the Q2 FY2027 report, and the spring season in which the first products of the new organization arrive.
What changes in the model:
The revenue path of every case: evidence of failure moves the base case's return to growth and its reset-cost step toward the bear case's; evidence of full-price sell-through supports the base path and moves weight toward the bull.

Gross margin without the recovery

Observation:
Gross margin with no tariff recovery in it, year on year; management guided it slightly higher for the first quarter. The line moves with reset costs, tariffs, mix, pricing and sourcing together, so a rise supports the repair without isolating its cause; the company's attribution is what can apportion it.
Assessment window:
Q1 FY2027 and Q2 FY2027, the two quarters left in the guided earnings window.
What changes in the model:
The reset-cost and supply-chain steps: a rise the company ties to reset costs ending and supply-chain savings supports the base case's steps; a flat or lower margin, or a rise from elsewhere, weighs toward the bear case's.

The tariff cost is stated

Observation:
The company states what the replacement tariffs cost, as an amount or a margin effect. Gross margin alone cannot show it: the same line moves with reset costs, mix, pricing and sourcing.
Assessment window:
The investor day on 11-16-2026 and the FY2027 quarterly reports.
What changes in the model:
The tariff step of every bridge, sized by an assumed share of the recovered FY2026 cost continuing; until the cost is stated, that share stays a sensitivity.

Greater China falls further

Observation:
Greater China revenue declining at or beyond its recent rate with its segment margin still falling, rather than stabilizing.
Assessment window:
The next two quarters, and the first locally created product in the holiday season of next year.
What changes in the model:
The China assumption, recalibrated to the deterioration observed. The base case keeps the segment at its FY2026 level; the tested further decline, revenue down another 20.0% at a 15.0% margin, taking the base margin to 7.3%, is a defined adverse case showing the scale of a sustained deterioration, not the response to one weak quarter.

A financial framework, or none

Observation:
At the investor day, a stated margin path with the revenue and cost base behind it, or the absence of one.
Assessment window:
The investor day on 11-16-2026.
What changes in the model:
A judgment across timing, operating assumptions and the multiple: a credible framework would narrow the uncertainty without showing that the economics will be delivered or that any multiple is justified; no framework, or one that pushes recovery out, would weigh on each.

Blockhaven view

We reassessed the rating at this session's close. The base case remains near the illustrative hurdle, with a wide range of outcomes and incomplete evidence of demand and profit repair. Net cash provides resilience, but the dividend is not fully covered by the latest year's free cash flow, and the base case still needs full-price demand and margin improvement. A lower price or stronger operating evidence could make the balance more favorable; renewed deterioration or a higher price without better earnings would weaken it. The thesis and our confidence in the evidence are unchanged.

NIKE has made substantial corrective moves, and distribution repair is visible in North America and wholesale. Durable consumer demand, underlying profitability and the economics of the replacement product are not yet proven: North America's margin fell on the basis this report uses for the group, Sportswear and Jordan Streetwear remain under pressure while NIKE deliberately reduces excess supply and rebuilds the product pipeline, and Greater China has no durable improvement behind it. At the last close the price is consistent with something close to the base case, so the view rests on evidence the next two quarters and the investor day can supply, and the decision rules say what that evidence would change.

What supports it, and what weighs against it

  • For: the year-over-year gross-margin drag excluding the recovery narrowed to -0.1 pp in the fourth quarter.
  • For: North America wholesale grew 14%, and the company says its business with a large sporting-goods partner grew for the first time in years.
  • Against: North America's recovery-excluded EBIT margin fell to 21.5%, and NIKE Direct in the region fell 6%.
  • Against: Greater China fell 17% in the fourth quarter, and free cash flow covered the dividend 0.91x.

The Blockhaven Rating is our assessment of the risk and reward at the last close of $35.99 over the horizon to 05-31-2028, under Blockhaven Rating Methodology v1. It is not a valuation objective and not individualized advice, and it can change when the price changes even where the thesis and the confidence do not. The scenario values are arithmetic on stated assumptions.

How the research was done

Verbatim from the full reportSection 25 of 26

Methodology and limitations

  • Company figures, earnings and scenarios
  • Every company figure in this report was extracted from a captured public document at a declared address and was not typed by its author; the figures that are computed are recomputed from those inputs each time the report is rendered or checked, and a difference refuses the report.
  • Interpretation: every figure in the interpretation is inserted from a value this report carries and none is typed by its author.
  • EBIT is income before income taxes less net interest income, which is the company's own definition, and it is checked against the EBIT the company reports. Gross margin is gross profit over revenue. Free cash flow is operating cash flow less additions to property, plant and equipment. Net cash is cash and short-term investments less the current and non-current portions of long-term debt. Market value is the last close times the diluted share count behind reported earnings per share, and enterprise value is market value less net cash.
  • Currency-neutral changes are the company's own non-GAAP measures, as reported and as whole percentages; Blockhaven does not recompute them and does not adjust them.
  • A fourth quarter is taken from the earnings release, because no quarterly report states one, and it is checked against the fiscal year less the first three quarters.
  • The recovery-excluded basis removes the IEEPA tariff recovery and nothing else; it describes the year, not sustainable earnings. A per-share effect the company states is used; otherwise the pre-tax amount at the year's effective tax rate over its diluted shares, and the bridge says which. A sensitivity item is not excluded. A segment the company allocated the item to is restated by that amount.
  • The trailing multiple history uses only figures published on or before each session: the quarterly report for the first three quarters of a year and the earnings release for the fourth. Reported trailing earnings include whatever unusual items each year contained, which is why the recovery-excluded multiple is stated beside the reported one.
  • The trailing multiple in the history table is computed on the last four reported quarters, so it differs slightly from the multiple in the table above it, which is computed on the fiscal year's own reported earnings per share. Both are stated rather than reconciled away.
  • Scenarios: a growth path, a margin bridged from the recovery-excluded base year, a tax rate, a share count and a multiple; the grid applies each grid multiple to each case. A continuing tariff cost is a share of the base year's tariff effect on the margin, held as a share of revenue rather than as a fixed amount. The exit value is the multiple on horizon-year earnings at the horizon year end; the annualized change runs from the last close over the days between, excluding dividends; the present value discounts the exit value at each illustrative hurdle over the same days, and so excludes interim dividends too. The cash line applies an assumed conversion of net income and the latest quarterly dividend annualized, for the horizon year only. The stress must lie wholly below the bear value. No probability is attached to any case.
  • Price-consistent outcomes run the valuation backwards from the last close at the stated tax rate on the current diluted shares: combinations consistent with the price, not what the market expects.
  • Blockhaven has no licensed market-share dataset. None appears in this report, and a company's statement about its own share is labelled as the company's.
  • Edition note: the charts in this designed edition are drawn from the same computed figures as the tables in this report, and each names the tables it draws from; none is an illustration, and none reproduces a price series. The Markdown edition carries no charts.
  • A dash in a table means the input for that cell is not in this report's data. It is never a zero.
  • Peers, currencies and prices
  • The peer set is a reviewed, version-controlled list pinned outside this report (peer set public/2026-09-22). Its groups say why each company is compared, and no average, median or composite of the peers is computed.
  • A company's trailing basis is the last twelve months to its latest interim period -- its latest fiscal year, plus the interim period that follows, less the same period a year earlier -- where every figure the table uses is reported for all three periods, and its latest fiscal year otherwise. Periods are matched by their start and end dates, never by label.
  • Net cash is cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments less financial borrowings, excluding lease liabilities, at the end of the trailing basis. Market value is the price of one ordinary share times the diluted weighted-average share count of the latest reported period; enterprise value is market value less net cash. A company's reported diluted earnings per share must agree with its net income over that share count, or its figures are refused.
  • A multiple whose price and earnings are in different currencies converts the price into the reporting currency at the European Central Bank reference rate for the valuation session. Amounts shown in one currency are converted at the same rates, beside the native figures.
  • A depositary receipt is used only from a sponsored program whose ratio the company states; its close becomes the price of one ordinary share at that ratio before any currency conversion.
  • Priced companies are valued at their closes for the 09-24-2026 session, each checked against publicly available market information before publication. The exchanges end their sessions hours apart, the standard same-date convention. A company whose listing did not trade that session, or has no approved price source, is never priced on another: its valuation is N/A with the reason, and its operating figures stay.
  • Direction of travel compares a company only with itself: latest-period year-on-year revenue growth against its fiscal year's, higher or lower beyond 1.0 pp, and latest-period operating margin against a year earlier -- fiscal year against fiscal year where no interim operating line is reported -- higher or lower beyond 0.5 pp. A latest quarter inside the latest fiscal year is set against that year. Net debt over operating income is in years; free cash flow over net income is stated only over a profit.
  • A multiple is not meaningful where its denominator is zero or negative, or where the reviewed peer set records that the accounting makes it misleading; the reason is printed beside it. A dash is a figure this report does not have, never a zero.
  • Technical context
  • Technical context: the trend is read from the close and its 50-day and 200-day simple averages. First resistance and first support are the edges of the nearest pivot zones above and below the close, a zone being a cluster of confirmed pivot highs or lows from the last year of sessions; where no zone lies on one side, the 52-week extreme stands in and the report says so. Relative performance is the difference between the six-month returns of the shares and each benchmark. These are rules, not forecasts, and they are not calibrated against outcomes.
  • Blockhaven checks that its internal price history is internally consistent and made up of completed sessions, and keeps it for research and quality control without republishing it. The latest close, the levels and the relative performance in the technical context are reviewed against publicly available market information before publication.
  • Prices in that history are split-adjusted but not dividend-adjusted.
  • Blockhaven Rating
  • Blockhaven Rating: our assessment of a security's risk and reward at the current price over the stated horizon. The full scale is 5 / 5 — COMPELLING; 4 / 5 — FAVORABLE; 3 / 5 — BALANCED; 2 / 5 — CAUTIOUS; 1 / 5 — POOR. It weighs the base case's annualized price change against the illustrative hurdles, the dividend and how well cash covers it, the spread between the bear, base and bull cases and the stress below them, the evidence behind the base case and the balance sheet. It is a documented judgment under Blockhaven Rating Methodology v1, not a formula, not a probability-weighted forecast and not individualized advice, and it is reviewed when the price moves materially or the evidence changes. Confidence is recorded separately: how far the evidence supports the assessment.

NIKE: Distribution Repair Is Visible; Demand and Profit Repair Are Not Yet Proven

Blockhaven's September 24, 2026 initiation on NIKE: distribution is recovering, but consumer demand and profit repair are not yet proven. A dated research record; the October 9, 2026 update lowered the rating and replaced the base case.

NIKE Q1 FY2027: What Changed From Our Pre-Earnings View

Blockhaven's October 9, 2026 update on NIKE: the first quarter matched guidance but the full-year guidance did not, and Blockhaven lowers NKE to 2/5 Cautious at the October 8 close. A dated research record that supplements the September 24 initiation.
